Heritage Mapping Initiative Documents 300 Historic Structures in Palayapalayam

Category: Culture

A heritage survey was recently carried out in Palayapalayam, Rajapalayam, as part of the Rajapalayam LPA Master Plan, which places strong emphasis on safeguarding the city’s historic buildings. The initiative brought together final-year B.Arch students from Kalasalingam University, and faculty from Ramco Institute of Technology, under the aegis of Ramco Community Services.

Over the course of the study, the team identified more than 300 heritage buildings and civil structures, dating from 75 to 250 years. The work focused on Palayapalayam, the earliest settlement in Rajapalayam, with roots going back over 300 years.
Students meticulously documented the architectural details of these structures through 2D sketches, photographs, and measurements. They assessed the condition, strength, and distinctive features of each building, compiling all data into the Epicollect app for organised storage and future analysis.

The broader aim of the initiative is to increase awareness among current property owners about the heritage value of their buildings. The team hopes to support preservation efforts by offering technical insights and guidance wherever needed.
