We observed the pupa of the Painted Jezebel butterfly on the fences of Vettaiperumal Kovil, an exciting and noteworthy sight. This butterfly is a striking and easily recognisable species, known in Tamil as “Manjal Azhaki.” Its presence reflects the healthy biodiversity of the temple surroundings.

The host plant of the Painted Jezebel is Loranthus, on which the butterfly lays its eggs and completes its early life stages.

The adult Painted Jezebel is visually distinctive, with white wings marked by black-dusted veins on the upper side, and yellow to orange undersides adorned with bold red markings and black veins, particularly prominent on the hindwings. These vibrant colours make it one of the most attractive butterflies commonly seen in the region.
