This photo of Laterite and red sandstone formations was taken at Sanjeevi Hills. These rocks belong to the sedimentary rock family. They are easily identified by their reddish colour, which results from the presence of iron oxide. Laterite rocks have a porous to moderately compact structure and show a natural resistance to weathering.
These rocks play an important role in controlling soil erosion, supporting groundwater recharge, and maintaining ecological balance in hill and forest landscapes. Their porous nature allows rainwater to percolate into the ground, aiding in water conservation.
Because of their natural appearance and environmental benefits, laterite and red sandstones are commonly used in eco parks, forest pathways, landscaping, and sustainable construction.
