The Midnapore Creeper in Morning Light at Eco Park

Category: Eco Park

This plant, seen in the photograph taken at the Sanjeevi Malai Eco Park, is commonly known as the Midnapore creeper. Its botanical name is Rivea hypocrateriformis. A member of the Convolvulaceae family, it is native to the Indian subcontinent and is notable for its botanical, ecological, and cultural significance.

The plant has large, heart-shaped (cordate) leaves that create a striking foliage display even when it is not in bloom. Its showy white, funnel-shaped flowers usually open at night or in the early morning, which is why they appear especially radiant at sunrise.
The Midnapore creeper is a vigorous woody climber capable of rapidly covering trees, fences, and rocky slopes. Its flowers attract moths, bees, and butterflies, thereby supporting local biodiversity. Hardy and drought-tolerant, the plant thrives in dry and rocky terrain once established, making it well suited for eco-restoration projects. As a native species, it plays an important role in sustaining natural ecosystems and traditional landscapes.
