DEWATS Nature-Based Wastewater Treatment at the Polytechnic Hostel

Category: Carbon Neutrality

Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS) is a nature-based method for treating wastewater close to the source. At Ramco Community Services, we use this system to treat liquid waste from toilets and bathrooms generated at the hostel of P.A.C. Ramasamy Raja Polytechnic College.

In this process, wastewater first enters a settling tank where solids, oils, and grease are separated. The water then flows through chambers containing anaerobic bacteria that break down organic pollutants. It finally passes through a gravel bed planted with wetland plants such as Canna, where further filtration and sunlight exposure remove remaining impurities and pathogens. DEWATS is low-cost, simple to maintain, and eco-friendly. The treated water can be safely reused for plantation and landscape irrigation.
