Category: Underground Sewage System
Rajapalayam Municipality in Virudhunagar District is implementing a modern Underground Sewerage System (UGSS) to transform sanitation and wastewater management in the city. The system covers 11.36 square kilometers and includes a 21.85 MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) designed to efficiently treat municipal wastewater and ensure safe disposal.
The project comprises an extensive network of sewer lines and pumping mains, along with multiple sewage pumping and lift stations, all structured to efficiently convey wastewater to the STP. Executed under modern design-build-operate (DBO) principles, the UGSS integrates advanced technologies with long-term operation and maintenance strategies. Key stakeholders include the TWAD Board, Madurai, supported by the Tamil Nadu Urban Flagship Investment Program (TNUFIP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Once operational, the UGSS will enhance public health, reduce environmental pollution, and establish a sustainable wastewater management system, positioning Rajapalayam as a model for modern urban sanitation.
