At Vettai Perumal Kanmai, several small islands rise quietly from the waters, forming a chain of natural refuges across the lake. In the photograph, birds can be seen gathered on one such island – a common sight here, as these scattered patches of land provide safe and undisturbed spaces within the kanmai.
These lake islands play an important role in supporting bird life. Surrounded by water, they offer protection from many mainland predators and reduce human disturbance, making them ideal nesting grounds. Colonial birds often breed together in such secure locations, while waterfowl prefer these isolated spots to lay their eggs. The safety of the islands helps ensure better survival of eggs and chicks.
Beyond nesting, the islands also serve as resting and roosting areas, especially for migratory birds. Together, the many islands of Vettai Perumal Kanmai enhance biodiversity and function as natural sanctuaries, strengthening the lake’s role as a thriving habitat for birds.
