This photograph from Sanjeevi Malai eco park area shows Katu Ilanthai (Ziziphus xylopyrus), a drought-resistant shrub or small tree native to India’s dry regions. Belonging to the Rhamnaceae family, it is commonly known as wild jujube.
The plant, which grows up to 3–8 metres, is identified by its rough bark, paired thorns, small shiny leaves, and hard woody fruits that turn yellow-brown when mature. It thrives in arid and semi-arid conditions and can grow in poor, rocky soils.
Traditionally, the species is valued for its medicinal uses, fodder, and fuelwood. Its dense thorny branches are also used for fencing. Experts highlight its ecological role in supporting birds, pollinators, and small animals, while also aiding soil stabilization and eco-restoration efforts.
