Strengthening Community Action for a Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam

Category: Solid Waste Management

The path to carbon neutrality begins with people. Policies and plans matter, but it is community participation that turns them into reality. One of the simplest yet most powerful contributions citizens can make is responsible waste management, starting at home.

On 16th June 2025, we conducted an Awareness Meeting at Melarajakularaman Village Panchayat (Rajapalayam Block). The event saw the active participation of 82 women from 16 Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and the dedicated Melarajakularaman Green Friends, reaffirming that women-led community action is central to sustainable change.

The session focused on the Twin Bin Segregation System, household-level source segregation, and the importance of waste processing through decentralised methods such as composting and biogas. These practices reduce landfill burden, cut pollution, and empower communities to recover resources locally. A detailed briefing on the Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam Project goals further highlighted how behavioural change can drive climate action.

The presence of dignitaries including Mr. A.R.R. Raghuraman, Hon’ble MLA of Sattur, and local officials added momentum to the initiative. The meeting concluded with an interactive Q&A, where participants voiced their views and pledged support.

This effort is more than an awareness drive. It is a step toward community-led sustainability. By embracing simple practices like twin bins and source segregation, every household can reduce waste, cut emissions, and help build a cleaner, greener Rajapalayam. Together, we move closer to the vision of a Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam—powered by people, driven by community action.
