Auroville Designer Conducts Upcycling Furniture Workshop

Category: Carbon Neutrality

Mr. Marc Dana, an upcycling furniture designer from Auroville, is conducting a week-long hands-on workshop in the city from April 27, 2026 to train students in creating functional furniture from discarded materials such as wood and steel.

The programme, organised for students of Ramco Industrial Training Institute, has been arranged by Ramco Community Services as part of the Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam initiative aimed at promoting sustainable practices and environmental awareness.

During the workshop, participants are being trained to design and build furniture items including chairs, tables, workstations, and sofas using reclaimed materials that would otherwise be treated as waste. The sessions focus on practical skills, design thinking, and sustainable craftsmanship.

Upcycling is the process of transforming old or unused materials into products of higher value or utility, extending their lifespan and reducing the need for new raw materials. Experts note that such practices help reduce landfill waste, conserve natural resources, and lower carbon emissions associated with manufacturing and disposal.

The workshop has seen active participation from students and staff of Ramco ITI, along with members of Ramco Community Services.
