Community Awareness Programme on Waste Management at N. Puthur

Category: Solid Waste Management

A community awareness programme was conducted recently at N. Puthur in Sankaralingapuram-Nallamanaickenpatti area to educate residents on environmental hygiene, waste management, sanitation, and the importance of greenery for a healthier lifestyle.

The programme, attended by youth, women, and senior citizens, focused on promoting cleaner neighbourhood practices and sustainable living.

Participants were given awareness on the twin-bin system, with the green bin meant for biodegradable waste such as food and vegetable waste, and the blue bin for non-biodegradable waste such as plastic, metal, and dry waste. Organisers explained that source segregation helps reduce landfill burden and improves recycling efficiency.

The session also highlighted the importance of waste segregation in reducing pollution, preventing health risks, and supporting composting and recycling. Practical methods for separating wet, dry, and hazardous waste at household level were demonstrated.

Awareness was also created on the health risks of open defecation, including disease spread, water contamination, and poor sanitation conditions. Residents were encouraged to use toilets and maintain hygienic surroundings.

The importance of tree planting was discussed as a natural way to improve air quality, reduce heat, and support ecological balance. Participants were urged to plant and care for trees in their locality.
