In an effort to promote a cleaner and more sustainable environment, Rajapalayam Municipality has been organising “Cloth Bags” awareness campaigns across the town, urging residents to move away from single-use plastics and adopt eco-friendly alternatives in their daily lives.
The awareness drives include door-to-door campaigns, market outreach programmes, school awareness events, and community meetings in various wards with the support of sanitation workers, Green Friends, community volunteers, and local residents. The focus of these programmes is to spread the message that plastic waste poses a serious environmental challenge by affecting public health, clogging drainage systems, harming animals, and contributing to poor sanitation conditions.
As part of the initiative, cloth bags are distributed to the public during. Residents are being encouraged to carry reusable cloth bags while shopping and reduce dependence on disposable plastic carry bags. The campaign also seeks to create greater awareness among shopkeepers, households, students, and youth groups about the long-term environmental impact of plastic pollution and the importance of adopting sustainable alternatives.
Municipal staff and volunteers have been interacting directly with the public, explaining how excessive plastic usage contributes to land and water pollution while also affecting civic infrastructure such as stormwater drains. The awareness drives form part of the municipality’s broader efforts to improve sanitation, reduce plastic waste generation, and promote environmentally responsible habits among citizens.
