At first glance, it looks like an ordinary cafeteria table – sturdy, functional and neatly finished. It now occupies pride of place in a newly renovated office of Ramco Community Services (RCS). But unlike most furniture, this table has a story to tell.
Its steel frame was crafted from discarded sheet metal and square steel tubes, while the tabletop was made using granite slabs that had been lying unused in one of the group’s factories. Rather than being sold as scrap or ending up in a landfill, these materials were given a second life through thoughtful design, skilled craftsmanship and a commitment to sustainability.
Every aspect of the fabrication reflected an environmentally conscious approach. Instead of conventional mechanical fasteners, silicone sealant was used to bond the steel frame to the granite slab, creating a clean, durable finish while minimising the use of additional materials.
The project was executed by students of the Ramco Industrial Training Institute under the guidance of experienced staff. Having been trained in upcycling techniques, the students transformed discarded materials into a high-quality, functional piece of furniture. For them, the project was more than a fabrication exercise – it was practical training in sustainable engineering, resource conservation and creative problem-solving.
The new cafeteria table is the latest addition to a growing collection of upcycled furniture across RCS offices, including work tables, chairs, computer chairs, bookshelves and even a spiral staircase. Each piece reflects a simple yet powerful philosophy: the most sustainable resource is often the one that already exists.
