Rajapalayam Municipality Takes Proactive Step to Strengthen Waste Management

Category: Solid Waste Management

As part of the Rajapalayam Carbon Neutral Initiative, the Rajapalayam Municipality has taken a proactive step towards strengthening sustainable waste management by undertaking a comprehensive self-audit of waste management practices across its municipal buildings. The exercise was carried out with the support of Ramco Community Services, reflecting a collaborative commitment to building a cleaner and more environmentally responsible city.

The baseline assessment was conducted by experts from Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation, who carried out detailed field visits to municipal offices, departments and supporting facilities. The assessment documented existing waste generation points and evaluated the current systems for waste segregation, collection, storage and disposal within the municipal complex.

As part of the exercise, the experts prepared a room-wise inventory of waste generated across the buildings and assessed the adequacy of waste collection infrastructure, including bins, storage areas and supporting facilities. They also evaluated the functioning of the existing Micro Composting Centre (MCC) and the Municipality’s resource recovery practices, mapping the complete flow of waste from its point of generation to its final disposal.

The assessment team conducted consultations with housekeeping staff, sanitation workers and municipal officials. The self-audit has provided the Municipality with a valuable baseline for planning future interventions. It identified suitable locations for additional waste stations, signage and public awareness displays. The findings will guide the design and implementation of an enhanced waste management system for the Rajapalayam Municipality.
