Ramco Community Services, in association with Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation, has been conducting awareness programmes for residents on waste segregation and responsible waste disposal.
As part of the ongoing initiative, an awareness programme was held last week at Indira Nagar, with around 15 men and women participating. The participants were residents of Indira Nagar, ESI Colony and Leelavathi Nagar, neighbourhoods located close to the Vettai Perumal Temple tank. Together, these residential areas comprise around 2,000 households.
Regular awareness campaigns have already resulted in a significant section of households adopting the two-bin system, which involves segregating wet and dry waste at source. The initiative is now taking the next step by creating awareness about the four-bin system, which separates household waste into four categories: wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and domestic special-care waste.
The campaign is also reaching out to school-going children. Educating children about waste segregation and environmental protection is expected to encourage them to practise segregation at home and motivate their parents to adopt better waste management habits.
The awareness programmes also highlight carbon neutrality, reduction of carbon emissions, environmental protection and sustainable waste management practices. With the restoration of the 14.5-acre water body, the initiative seeks to ensure that the benefits of restoration extend beyond the tank itself by creating a sustained, community-led effort to keep the surrounding neighbourhood clean and protect the water body from future pollution.
