A historic photograph preserved at Gandhi Kalai Mandram, the oldest and largest library in the city, offers a remarkable glimpse into the city’s deep connection with India’s freedom movement.

Taken on April 17, 1959, the photograph features then Prime Minister Sri Jawaharlal Nehru and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Sri K. Kamaraj alongside freedom fighters from Rajapalayam. More than six decades later, the photograph continues to serve as a visual record of the important role played by people from the city in the freedom struggle.

Rajapalayam was among the places in the erstwhile Madras Presidency where the national movement gained considerable momentum. Historical accounts document the active participation of local Congress workers in Gandhian movements, including the Non-Cooperation and Civil Disobedience movements. Research on the freedom movement in Rajapalayam also records significant resistance to British rule and the participation of several prominent local leaders.

The city also attracted several prominent national leaders during the freedom struggle. Mahatma Gandhi visited Rajapalayam twice, first on October 4, 1927, and again on January 25, 1934. The latter visit was part of his tour of Tamil Nadu during which he addressed issues including the removal of untouchability. The 1934 visit included a public meeting at Rajapalayam. Several other national leaders, including Dr. Rajendra Prasad also visited the town during the freedom movement.

For a city whose people actively participated in the freedom movement, such photographs are more than historical memorabilia. They provide a tangible connection between present-day generations and the individuals who witnessed and participated in the making of independent India.
