The work of establishing a Xerophyte Garden is currently in progress at Sanjeevi Malai Eco Park. A xerophyte garden is a specially designed landscape area featuring plants adapted to survive in low-water and dry climatic conditions. The primary objective of establishing the garden is to showcase the beauty, diversity and ecological significance of drought-tolerant plants while reducing water consumption and maintenance requirements.
The garden is being developed using a combination of xerophytic plants, succulents, Agave species, cacti, natural stones, gravel, soil mounds and low-water irrigation systems. Two key landscape elements of the garden are soil mounds and natural stones.
Small soil mounds have been created at different elevations to add visual interest and create a varied landscape. Based on the available space, approximately three to four major soil mounds have been developed. Appropriate slopes have been provided on the mounds to facilitate water drainage and prevent water stagnation.
Natural stones form another important element of the xerophyte landscape. Stones of varying sizes have been aesthetically arranged around the soil mounds and planting areas to create a natural, rocky landscape. Wherever possible, naturally available stones from within Sanjeevi Malai Eco Park have been used, including both large and small stones, thereby complementing the existing character of the site.
In addition, Agave species sourced from Ramco Nursery have been planted in the Xerophyte Garden. These plants, with their ability to thrive under low-water conditions, complement the garden’s overall objective of promoting water-efficient and sustainable landscaping.
