Greetings, everyone—I am Sanjeevi Malai.
For generations, I have stood majestically at the eastern borders of Rajapalayam, silently nurturing native timber, fragrant shrubs, lush grasses, and wildlife. From my summit, pristine streams spring to life, nourishing the ancient Ooranis and Kanmais that sustain the lands below.
Yet today, I cry out for your help.
As Rajapalayam has grown by leaps and bounds, my natural habitat has quietly suffered. During the parched months of August and September, heaps of waste discarded along my western slopes easily ignite into flames. What begins as a modest blaze rapidly ascends my hillsides, consuming naturally regenerating flora, tender saplings, and irreplaceable vegetation.
The fire may originate in refuse, but its devastation reaches far beyond the ash:
- I am no mere formation of stone—I am a sanctuary for wildlife.
- I am the lifeline that yields your water.
- I am the shield that anchors the soil and preserves the land.
- I am an inalienable part of Rajapalayam’s living legacy.
To reclaim and safeguard this ecosystem, the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission has spearheaded an ambitious Eco-Restoration Project for Sanjeevi Malai.
On September 9 and 10, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department, Rajapalayam Municipality, Ramco Community Services (RCS), and Shrishti united with neighbouring communities to foster awareness on responsible waste management and fire mitigation.
Yet, shielding Sanjeevi Malai is not a charge for institutions alone—it demands the devotion of every single citizen.
Don’t dump waste. Do not allow discarded refuse to fuel destructive blazes. Protect the fertile and grassy hillsides. Safeguard the living streams. Preserve our natural heritage today, lest our children and grandchildren inherit the bitter consequences of our neglect.
