This photograph was taken near Vettai Perumal Kanmai, showing the small but ecologically important plant Heliotropium indicum, commonly known as Indian heliotrope. It is a widely distributed herb that grows naturally in tropical regions and is often seen along roadsides, gardens, open grasslands and field edges.
Belonging to the Boraginaceae family, the plant usually grows about 15-60 cm tall. It has soft, hairy stems and dark green leaves that are oval in shape with a rough surface and prominent veins. Its most distinctive feature is its delicate flowers – tiny light purple to violet blooms with a yellow centre. These flowers are arranged in a curved cluster known as a scorpioid cyme, giving the plant a unique appearance.
Indian heliotrope is an excellent nectar source for pollinators. The small tubular flowers attract butterflies, bees and other insects. Butterflies such as the Plain Tiger, Common Grass Yellow, and Lemon Pansy are often seen visiting the flowers.
The plant thrives in warm tropical and subtropical climates and prefers full sunlight and well-drained soil. Though it often grows wild in open areas and wastelands, it plays an important ecological role by supporting pollinators and enriching local biodiversity. Small plants like these quietly contribute to the health of natural ecosystems around places such as Vettai Perumal Kanmai.
