Bengal Premna at Sanjeevimalai Eco Park

Category: Eco Park

A rare plant species – Premna bengalensis, commonly known as Bengal Premna, was identified at Sanjeevimalai Eco Park. The species is also found in the Sanjeevimalai Forest area. The germination was attempted at the Ramco Nursery, Rajapalayam, where the plant has successfully started growing, contributing to its conservation and propagation.

Premna bengalensis is an evergreen shrub or small tree that can grow up to 9 metres in height. It is valued for its medicinal properties and is traditionally used in the treatment of fevers, inflammation, coughs, stomach-related ailments, and skin diseases.

In traditional practice, herbal powders prepared from the leaves, roots, and bark are mixed with oil, ghee, or honey, along with roasted grain flour, to prepare a medicinal drink. This preparation is commonly used for managing conditions such as obesity, anemia, and diabetes.
