Engaging Communities to Prevent Water Pollution

Restoring a water body goes beyond physical clean-up. It requires the active involvement of the community that surrounds it. At Ramco Community Service, we believe awareness is key to long-term conservation. With this in mind, we regularly engage residents living around the Sri Vettai Perumal Temple water tank through focused outreach programs.

This photograph was taken during one such awareness session conducted for residents of Wards 2 to 5. The programme highlighted the major causes of water pollution, particularly the dumping of garbage and plastic waste. Residents were informed about how plastic harms fish and birds through ingestion and entanglement, how accumulated waste blocks sunlight and oxygen, damaging aquatic plants and the ecosystem, and how polluted water becomes unsafe for human use while creating foul odours.

The initiative encouraged households to segregate waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories and to completely avoid dumping waste into the water tank. Through collective responsibility and informed action, the community has taken an important step toward protecting this vital water body.
