Green Filtration: Using Canna indica to Purify Wastewater Naturally

At the PACR Polytechnic composite yard, wastewater from our educational institutions is treated through a Decentralised Wastewater Treatment System (DEWATS). It is a natural, low-energy method of treating wastewater close to its source using gravity flow, sedimentation, biological processes, and plant-based filtration. 

As part of this system, the DEWATS area includes gravel filter beds planted with Canna indica, a plant well known for its wastewater purification ability. Canna indica has a dense root network that supports beneficial microorganisms which break down organic pollutants as wastewater passes through the gravel beds. At the same time, the plant absorbs excess nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) that are commonly present in wastewater from kitchens, wash areas, and other institutional sources.

Through this natural filtration process, the water becomes significantly cleaner. The treated water is then reused within the campus for irrigation and nurturing plants, helping conserve fresh water while maintaining greenery.
