Lesser Grass Blue: A Tiny Jewel of the Grasslands

Category: Carbon Neutrality

This photograph of the Lesser Grass Blue butterfly was taken at the PACR Polytechnic compost yard. It is one of the smallest butterflies found in many parts of the world, with a wingspan of only 18-24 mm. Despite its tiny size, this delicate insect adds life and colour to everyday landscapes. It usually flies close to the ground, moving swiftly among grasses and small flowering plants, occasionally resting on tiny blossoms or blades of grass. Its gentle presence is a reminder of the rich biodiversity that can thrive even in simple green spaces.

The butterfly shows subtle yet attractive colour variations. Male butterflies usually display a light blue or violet-blue colour on the upper side of their wings, while females are mostly brown with only a small hint of blue. The underside of the wings is pale grey with small black spots, which helps the butterfly blend well with its surroundings when resting on grass or leaves.

The Lesser Grass Blue is commonly found in grasslands, gardens, roadside vegetation, and open fields. It has a wide distribution and occurs across India, Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, Australia, and parts of Africa.
