Natural Sewage Filter Beds Transform Vettai Perumal Kovil Kanmai

Category: Water Body Restoration

Rainwater from the hillock was once the only source of water for the Vettai Perumal Temple Irrigation Tank (‘kanmai’). Over time, the area around the tank developed into a busy residential neighborhood, and untreated sewage from the locality began entering the waterbody.

After the major restoration effort, four natural sewage filter bed treatment plants were installed around the kanmai. These systems purify wastewater using plants, soil, gravel, and microorganisms before the treated water is released into the tank. The shallow channels slow down the flow, allowing plant-based cleaning, microbial action, sedimentation, and filtration to remove pollutants.

The restored setup has eliminated open sewage flows, reduced smell and visible pollution, and lowered health risks. The initiative demonstrates how traditional tanks can be protected and sustained through simple, scientific, and eco-friendly solutions.
