This photograph, taken at the Sanjeevi Malai Eco Park area, shows the night-blooming shrub of ecological and medicinal significance, Barleria noctiflora L.f., commonly known as Night-flowering Barleria.
Native to India and Sri Lanka, Barleria noctiflora is commonly found along forest edges and in scrubland habitats. Its nocturnal flowering habit plays a crucial role in supporting night-active pollinators. The flowers attract moths and other nocturnal insects, thereby helping maintain pollinator diversity beyond daytime species.
From a biodiversity perspective, the shrub provides nectar and pollen for insects while also offering shelter and micro-habitats for small insects and arthropods. As part of the understory vegetation, it contributes to increased plant diversity and structural complexity within forest ecosystems.
The plant also aids in soil conservation. Its root system helps bind the soil, reducing erosion and making it useful for eco-restoration efforts in degraded or semi-natural landscapes. Owing to its low water requirement and minimal maintenance needs once established, Barleria noctiflora is considered suitable for eco-friendly gardens and sustainable landscaping projects.
In addition to its ecological value, the species holds medicinal importance in traditional medicine. It has been used in folk remedies for diabetes, with studies indicating its ability to inhibit enzymes related to blood sugar regulation. The plant also exhibits strong antioxidant activity due to the presence of phenols and flavonoids, along with anti-inflammatory properties.
