Effective Microorganisms (EM) is a mixture of beneficial microbes widely used to accelerate composting and improve compost quality. When prepared correctly, EM solution enhances microbial activity, reduces odour, and supports healthier soil.
We use the EM solution at the composting yard at PACR Polytechnic campus. The solutoin is prepared in house, and sprayed after laying the compost bed and again after turning the bed. This ensures uniform microbial activity throughout the composting material.
The benefits of spraying EM solution are significant. It speeds up the composting process by introducing beneficial microbes that rapidly break down organic waste, reducing the composting period to about 3 to 6 weeks instead of the usual 2 to 3 months. It helps control bad odour by suppressing harmful bacteria, improves nutrient quality including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK) levels, enhances soil health when the compost is applied, and reduces heat loss during composting.
By integrating EM solution into compost management, the process becomes faster, cleaner, and more efficient, resulting in high-quality compost that supports sustainable agriculture and soil restoration.
