Solid Waste Management in Rajapalayam: A Step Towards Sustainability

Cities generate tonnes of waste every day — from household garbage to industrial and medical waste. Without responsible handling, this waste can pose serious risks to public health and the environment. That’s why Solid Waste Management (SWM) is not just a civic necessity but a foundation for sustainable urban living. It plays a vital role in a city’s journey toward Carbon Neutrality by advancing the core sustainability principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. To professionalise the effort further, RCS has engaged a team of experts from Indore, consistently ranked as India’s cleanest city. This team leads awareness campaigns, helps identify Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs), and proposes strategies for their elimination along with urban beautification projects. Through these strategic, citizen-centric interventions, Ramco Community Services is helping Rajapalayam evolve into a cleaner, greener, and more liveable city — and setting a strong example in community-driven sustainable development.

In Rajapalayam, a functional door-to-door waste collection system is managed by the Municipality with support from private contractors. Waste is sorted at source, and the biodegradable waste is sent to Micro Composting Centres (MCCs) and Onsite Composting Centres, where it is converted into agricultural manure. Meanwhile, non-biodegradable waste is transported to a centralised facility on the town’s outskirts for further processing.

Playing a pivotal role in strengthening this system is Ramco Community Services (RCS), a not-for-profit organisation that partners closely with the Rajapalayam Municipality. RCS focuses on community engagement and public education around crucial waste practices — including twin-bin segregation, household-level source segregation, and decentralised waste management.
