Water-draining bunds are specially designed embankments that allow excess water from outside the water body to enter and pass through the kanmai in a controlled manner, preventing overflow, erosion, and damage to surrounding land during periods of heavy rainfall. Constructed using locally available natural materials, these bunds offer a sustainable and environmentally compatible solution while maintaining ecological balance.
As seen in the photograph – taken from inside the water body, locally sourced stones are used to line the water-draining bund. This stone arrangement effectively dissipates the force of incoming water, minimizes soil erosion, and strengthens the embankment during heavy rains and high inflow conditions.
This water-draining bund is located at Sri Vettai Perumal Temple Kanmai, which has a total of 12 such structures. Together, they safely channel excess inflows, reduce stress on the embankments, and support the kanmai’s long-term water management system.
