Sweet Acacia at Sanjeevi Malai

Category: Greening Sanjeevi Hills

This tree, seen as a lone specimen near the temple at Sanjeevi Malai, is Acacia farnesiana, a small thorny tree belonging to the Fabaceae. Commonly known as Sweet Acacia, it is valued for its fragrant yellow flowers and its ability to thrive in dry environments. In some parts of Tamil Nadu, it is also associated with the local name Kasthuri Vel.

Native to Central America, South America, and Mexico, the species has spread widely across tropical and subtropical regions and is now naturalised in countries like India, as well as parts of Africa and Australia.

Sweet Acacia usually grows between 3 and 8 metres in height. It has sharp paired thorns on its branches and delicate, feathery bipinnate leaves. The tree is easily recognised by its small, round, ball-shaped yellow flowers that are pleasantly fragrant. It also produces curved cylindrical pods containing several seeds.

The plant thrives in dry and semi-arid landscapes, sandy soils, and open wastelands, making it highly drought tolerant. Because it belongs to the legume family, it also improves soil fertility through nitrogen fixation. Its flowers are a valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinators.

Given its resilience and adaptability to dry climates, Acacia farnesiana can survive well in regions like Tamil Nadu and may play a useful role in eco-park restoration and dryland plantation projects.
