Underground Sewage System: A Cornerstone of Healthy and Sustainable Cities

Ramco Community Services (RCS) plays an instrumental role in supporting the implementation of this transformative civic project. Collaborating with the Rajapalayam Municipality, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD), and other government agencies, RCS contributes to both the design and field-level execution of surveys to collect vital data and feedback from households. This data is used to assess the efficiency of the system and suggest actionable improvements. RCS also works closely with municipal engineers and state authorities to ensure that implementation is citizen-friendly and technically sound. In addition, RCS engages experts in engineering, sanitation technology, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support the UGSS rollout — ensuring that this vital urban infrastructure project achieves its full potential in serving the people and protecting the environment. A well-designed Underground Sewage System (UGSS) is critical to building healthy, efficient, and environmentally sustainable cities. Unlike open drains or on-site septic tanks, UGSS offers a closed, hygienic, and efficient method of wastewater disposal. It eliminates the risk of waterborne diseases, prevents groundwater contamination, and improves overall public health.

By systematically collecting and treating sewage, UGSS ensures cleaner streets, reduces manual scavenging, and contributes significantly to urban convenience and quality of life. Moreover, by capturing and processing sewage in a controlled manner, UGSS reduces methane emissions from decomposing waste and supports proper wastewater treatment — making it a key enabler in a city’s path toward Carbon Neutrality and environmental protection.

In Rajapalayam, a comprehensive UGSS project is currently underway across all 42 municipal wards. This initiative aims to replace existing septic tanks in thousands of residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. By transitioning to an underground system, the town is taking a major step toward modernising its sanitation infrastructure, improving urban resilience, and creating a cleaner and healthier living environment for its citizens.
