Vettai Perumal Kanmai once bore the strain of sewage-mixed inflow. Instead of relying on heavy machinery or chemical treatment, the restoration project placed its faith in nature to improve water quality.
Natural filter systems were installed at every inlet where water enters the lake. Yet the design deliberately allows environmental and ecosystem processes – sunlight, sedimentation, microorganisms, aquatic plants, and wind, to work in harmony to cleanse the water.
As the water flows in, heavier particles gradually sink and settle at the bottom through sedimentation. Sunlight spreads across the surface each day, helping to reduce harmful microorganisms. Beneath the surface, beneficial bacteria quietly break down organic waste. Aquatic plants act as living filters, absorbing excess nutrients such as nitrogen and preventing further contamination. Meanwhile, the wind gently stirs the water, increasing oxygen levels. This oxygen supports aquatic life and strengthens the lake’s natural purification cycle.
Water samples now confirm the transformation. The lake water regularly meets irrigation quality standards. pH levels remain within the proper range. Total Suspended Solids are under control. Biochemical Oxygen Demand, which measures the oxygen required to decompose organic matter, is at safe levels. Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen, which indicates nitrogen content, is also within acceptable limits.
What machines might have accomplished with noise and cost, the lake has achieved through patience, balance, and the quiet power of nature.
