White Bark Acacia of Sanjeevi Malai: A Resilient Tree of Rajapalayam

Category: Greening Sanjeevi Hills

Commonly found in and around Rajapalayam, especially across the slopes of Sanjeevi Malai, White Bark Acacia (Acacia leucophloea), known locally as Velvelam is a hardy presence in the region’s semi-arid landscape. Belonging to the Fabaceae (legume) family, this drought-resistant tree thrives where many others struggle.

The tree is easily identified by its pale white to light grey, rough and flaky bark. It grows to a height of about 15 to 20 metres and bears small, feathery bipinnate leaves along with short, paired thorns. During its flowering season from February to April, the tree produces creamy white to pale yellow, fragrant, round flower heads that attract bees and other pollinators. These are followed by flat, curved seed pods.

Widely distributed across India’s dry plains and scrub forests, Acacia leucophloea is especially common in Tamil Nadu’s semi-arid zones. Beyond its visual identity, the tree holds strong ecological value. As a nitrogen-fixing species, it enriches the soil and improves fertility. It provides much-needed shade in hot climates, supports birds and insects, and its leaves serve as fodder for cattle and goats.
