Sanjeevi Malai, one of the prominent hill formations and ecological landmarks of Rajapalayam, is supported by an extensive network of check dams constructed to conserve water, reduce runoff, and prevent soil erosion across the hill slopes.
Located on the eastern side of Rajapalayam, Sanjeevi Malai itself covers about 222.74 hectares and rises to a maximum altitude of around 380 metres, according to Tamil Nadu government restoration and planning documents. Sanjeevi Malai is known for its ecological, historical, and environmental significance. The hillock forms part of the natural landscape that moderates the climate of the region and contributes to local water catchment systems. Recent environmental restoration plans by the Tamil Nadu government have also identified the hill for ecological conservation efforts.
According to available details, the check dams have been strategically distributed across different sides of the hill. These structures play an important role in slowing rainwater flow, improving groundwater recharge, conserving soil moisture, and reducing land degradation in the surrounding dry terrain.
