Ramco Community Services has launched a short awareness video highlighting the importance of the Underground Sewage System (UGSS) in protecting public health and preventing the pollution of water bodies in Rajapalayam.
The video, released as part of an ongoing public awareness campaign, showcases how the UGSS contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment by ensuring the scientific collection, treatment and recycling of used water.
The video opens with visuals of the reservoirs located at the foothills of the Western Ghats, which serve as a primary source of drinking water for the people of the city. It then shifts focus to the challenges posed by untreated wastewater, showing how it often flows into open drains where it stagnates, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and insects. Such stagnant water also emits foul odour and adversely affects air quality.
The film presents the UGSS as a comprehensive solution to these issues. It explains how the system helps prevent the spread of communicable diseases such as dengue and malaria by eliminating stagnant wastewater from residential areas.
The video further traces the journey of wastewater through the UGSS network to the centralised water recycling centre. There, the water undergoes multiple stages of treatment before being discharged into the Kothankulam water body.
With treated water, which meets the standards prescribed by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board for agricultural use, being released throughout the year, Kothankulam has emerged as the only water body in the city that retains water round the year, the video notes.
The awareness film also features testimonials from residents who state that the implementation of UGSS has significantly reduced water stagnation in their neighbourhoods and curtailed the mosquito menace to a large extent. Having highlighted the environmental and health benefits of the system, the video appeals to residents who are yet to connect their buildings to the UGSS network to come forward and join what it describes as a “health revolution” in the city.
