Three years ago, a barren stretch of land at Sanjeevi Malai Eco Park was transformed through a carefully planned ecological restoration initiative. Today, the same landscape stands as a thriving green belt, demonstrating the remarkable success of native species restoration and sustainable afforestation.
The plantation at the eco park was established using the Shelter Belt Method, a mixed plantation technique widely recognised for protecting landscapes against wind and soil erosion while creating resilient green ecosystems. Unlike conventional monoculture plantations, the project focused entirely on indigenous tree species, ensuring that the restored habitat remains ecologically compatible with the local environment.
The first phase of the project involved planting 2,700 saplings representing 43 native species. The saplings were arranged in seven rows with a spacing of 1.5 metres between plants, creating a dense, multi-layered plantation designed to withstand harsh climatic conditions and encourage biodiversity. Every sapling used in the plantation was raised in Ramco Nursery.
Preparatory work for the plantation began with pit excavation on 8 May 2023, followed by the commencement of planting on 24 May 2023. Over the past three years, the saplings have matured into a vibrant green landscape that now blends seamlessly with the surrounding natural environment.
The thriving Shelter Belt plantation not only protects the landscape from erosion but also serves as an inspiring example of how scientific planning, native biodiversity, and sustained care can successfully restore degraded land.
