Four-Bin Waste Segregation Awareness Programme for SHGs

Category: Solid Waste Management

Around 50 women from two Self-Help Groups (SHGs) participated in a four-bin waste segregation awareness programme organised by Shrishti on behalf of Ramco Community Services, as part of efforts to promote scientific waste management and responsible household waste segregation.

The interactive awareness session, held at Boobalpatti Street, and Sankarankovil Mukku, introduced participants to the concept of segregating waste into four distinct categories using a four-bin system. The women were educated on the importance of separating biodegradable waste, recyclable dry waste, sanitary and domestic hazardous waste, and segregating waste at the source to improve recycling, reduce landfill burden and ensure safer waste handling.

Resource persons explained how proper segregation at the household level plays a crucial role in creating an efficient solid waste management system. Demonstrations and discussions helped participants understand which types of waste belong in each bin and highlighted common mistakes that often contaminate recyclable materials.
