The District Collectorate organised a two-day environmental awareness programme for school students in Rajapalayam on August 5 and 6, aimed at sensitising young people to environmental protection, sustainable practices and their role in creating a cleaner future.
As part of the two-day programme, a half-day event featuring a series of sessions was held at Ramco Institute of Technology (RIT). The event was hosted by the Eco Club of RIT. It brought together more than 50 students, teachers and government officials for discussions and interactive sessions on environmental sustainability.
Shrishti Environmental and Livelihood Foundation (SELF) handled a technical session on Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam. The SELF team comprising Ms. Naveena, Mr. Sankarapandiyan, Mr. Rameshwaran and Ms. Suvitha conducted the session, introducing students to the Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam project and its objectives.
The session covered the major activities undertaken under the project, achievements and positive impacts so far, as well as the key challenges facing solid waste management (SWM). The team also discussed future action plans and sustainable strategies being explored to strengthen environmental management in Rajapalayam.
A key focus of the session was the role of students in bringing about behavioural change. The experts explained how students can influence waste segregation practices at home, promote responsible waste management among their peers and families, and contribute to wider efforts towards environmental protection.
A question-and-answer session at the end gave students an opportunity to test their understanding of the issues discussed. Students who gave the best answers were appreciated with special gifts, recognising their enthusiasm and commitment to environmental sustainability.
