Segregating waste at source can make a significant difference to how a neighbourhood manages its waste. Taking this message to residents, Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation conducted a Four-Bin Awareness and Live Demonstration Programme recently at Duraisamiyapuram Street in Ward 26, on behalf of Ramco Community Services.
The programme focused on making waste segregation simple and practical for households. Rather than limiting the session to awareness talks, Shrishti used a live demonstration with sample waste items to show residents how everyday household waste should be identified and placed in the appropriate bin.
Residents were introduced to the four-bin system: the green bin for wet and biodegradable waste, the blue bin for dry and recyclable waste, the red bin for sanitary waste, and the black bin for special-care waste. The live demonstration helped residents understand an important aspect of source segregation: seemingly similar household items may need to be handled differently. Residents were encouraged to segregate waste at home, avoid mixing wet and dry waste, and hand over the segregated waste to sanitation workers.
The session also highlighted what happens when waste is segregated correctly. Wet waste can be channelled for composting, recyclable materials can be recovered for recycling, and the amount of waste ultimately sent to landfills can be reduced. Proper segregation also makes waste collection and subsequent processing safer and more efficient for sanitation workers.
Residents actively participated in the programme, raised questions and clarified their doubts on waste segregation. The interaction helped reinforce the idea that effective waste management begins not at the collection point or processing facility, but inside every household.
