Every Person Deserves a Second Chance

One of the greatest privileges of being a volunteer counsellor at Ātmaprasāra is witnessing the quiet transformation of people who have almost given up on themselves.

A few months ago, a gentleman walked into our counselling centre seeking help to overcome alcohol addiction. He appeared exhausted—not just physically, but emotionally. I welcomed him into a safe, private space, offered him a glass of water, and assured him, “You are safe here. We can talk.”

As trust slowly developed, he shared the pain he had been carrying for years. After a painful argument with his wife, he had turned to alcohol once again and believed he had failed himself and his family. Rather than judging him, I simply listened. Sometimes, the greatest gift we can offer another person is our presence and a compassionate ear. I acknowledged his courage in seeking help and reminded him that asking for support is the first step towards recovery.

Since he had consumed alcohol that day, my immediate priority was his safety. I contacted a trusted family member, ensured he returned home safely, and scheduled a follow-up session.

Over the next eight counselling sessions, he committed himself to the recovery process with remarkable determination. Today, he is free from alcohol addiction, has rebuilt his family relationships, and is leading a healthier, more meaningful life.

Helping someone rediscover hope—without expectation—is one of life’s greatest rewards.
