Around 50 students from Chinmaya Vidyalaya Srimathi P.A.C.R Sethuramammal Nursery & Primary School recently embarked on an enriching nature walk at Ramco Nursery, located within the premises of PACR Polytechnic. The visit followed a series of short classroom sessions on the environment conducted by botanists from Ramco Nursery, giving the students an opportunity to take their learning beyond the classroom and experience nature first-hand.
During their visit, the students were introduced to a variety of trees and plants and learned how plants are germinated, nurtured and cared for at the nursery. The experience helped them understand the different stages involved in the growth of plants and appreciate the diversity of the natural world around them.
The programme also introduced the children to the art of observing nature. They were guided on how to watch leaves and flowers closely and identify the different aspects and features that make each plant unique. Similarly, they learned how to observe insects and birds, paying attention to their characteristics, movements and other distinctive features.
An important part of the nature walk was learning to listen to nature. The students were encouraged to pause, absorb the sounds around them and distinguish between the calls of birds, the sounds of insects, rustling leaves and other natural sounds. This exercise helped them experience nature not merely by seeing it, but also by listening to and engaging with their surroundings more closely.
The programme concluded with an introduction to nature care, highlighting the importance of protecting plants, wildlife and the environment. The students were encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility towards nature and adopt simple practices that can help preserve it.
By combining classroom learning with direct observation and exploration, the visit to Ramco Nursery offered the students a meaningful and memorable learning experience. Such exposure can help children develop a deeper appreciation for nature, encourage them to take up nature walks as a hobby and, perhaps, inspire some of them to become future naturalists and botanists.
