Three venerable stone sculptures have been discovered at Kondaneri Kanmai near Madathupatti, Rajapalayam. Local community organiser Mr. Vineeth brought the sculptures to light for further research. Subsequently, Dr B. Kandasamy, an Assistant Professor of History at Rajapalayam Rajus’ College and an archaeology researcher, conducted fieldwork in the area.
The sculptures are believed to date from the 17th century CE. They include two hero stones, known as nadukal, and one sati stone, known as satikkal. Hero stones were erected in memory of warriors who died bravely.
The first warrior is depicted standing with a spear and a curved sword. He wears ornaments, and has a decorated hairstyle. He is shown with protective coverings on his knees and anklets. The second warrior is shown holding a spear with both hands. He wears earrings, necklaces, armlets, a flower garland, a belt and anklets.
The third sculpture is a sati stone depicting a warrior and his wife seated together. The warrior holds a sword, while his wife carries a lotus flower and an auspicious object. The upper section contains three decorative panels featuring lion faces. Local people worship these sculptures as Karuppasamy, Karuppayi and Sudalaimaadan. The sculptures become submerged when the water level in the tank rises.
These discoveries are historically significant because they provide valuable information about the courage, customs, beliefs, clothing, ornaments and lifestyle of the people who lived in the region centuries ago. Dr B. Kandasamy has stressed the need for further research, particularly because several sati stones have been discovered in the Rajapalayam region. Such studies could deepen our understanding of the area’s social and cultural history.
In essence , they are not just stones of sacrifice and tales of glory but a standing testimony to Rajapalayam’s ancient past.
