Ten awareness programmes on four-bin waste segregation were conducted across five municipal wards last week by Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation, with the support of Ramco Community Services.
The programmes sensitised residents to the importance of segregating waste at source and following responsible waste disposal practices. Resource persons explained the need to separate waste at the household level before handing it over to collection workers and demonstrated the four-bin system.
Residents were briefed on the appropriate disposal of four categories of waste – wet waste, dry and recyclable waste, sanitary waste and special-care waste. The sessions also highlighted how proper source segregation facilitates recycling and composting and reduces the volume of waste sent to landfills.
Residents were encouraged to use the appropriate bins consistently and avoid mixing different types of waste. The awareness teams also addressed their queries on segregation and collection practices and urged them to spread the message among family members and neighbours.
The campaign aimed to strengthen community participation in maintaining clean and healthy neighbourhoods and encourage source-level waste segregation as a regular household practice.
