Ilanthai – the Hardy Native of Sanjeevi Malai

Category: Eco Park

At the planned Sanjeevi Malai Eco Park area, the resilient Ziziphus mauritiana, locally known as Ilanthai, thrives as a valuable native tree. Indigenous to India, this small to medium-sized tree (5-12 m) is easily recognised by its shiny leaves, paired thorns, and sweet, nutritious fruits that turn from green to yellowish-red when ripe. Rich in Vitamin C, calcium, and iron, the fruits are widely consumed fresh or processed.

Well-suited to arid and semi-arid regions, the tree grows even in poor, sandy, and saline soils. Its deep roots help prevent soil erosion, making it ideal for dryland farming and eco-restoration. Beyond nutrition, it supports livelihoods, providing fodder, shade, and uses in traditional medicine, while also benefiting biodiversity by attracting birds and pollinators.

Despite its thorny nature and need for occasional pruning, Ziziphus mauritiana stands out as a hardy, low-maintenance, and eco-friendly native species that supports both people and the environment.
