Ramco Community Services (RCS), through its Ramco Nursery, is equipping school students with practical horticultural skills while fostering a deeper understanding of environmental sustainability and climate action.

As part of the initiative, Ramco Nursery experts visit participating schools, conducting interactive sessions for one class at a time. The programme combines hands-on learning with environmental education, helping students understand that nurturing plants is not merely a gardening activity but an important contribution towards building a sustainable future.

During the sessions, students learn essential nursery techniques, including seed sowing, potting, transplanting, watering, plant care, and propagation. They are also taught to identify and classify plants based on characteristics such as leaf shape and arrangement, flower structure, growth habit, and other botanical features, enabling them to appreciate plant diversity and biodiversity.

A key component of the programme is creating awareness about carbon sequestration and its role in mitigating climate change. Students are introduced to the concept of how plants absorb and store atmospheric carbon dioxide, helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Experts also demonstrate composting techniques using organic waste generated at home and explain how composting prevents waste from reaching landfills, enriches soil health, and supports carbon sequestration, thereby contributing to the larger vision of Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam.

The sessions also emphasise the principles of the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and encourage students to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives. Topics such as waste segregation, water conservation, responsible consumption, and eco-friendly habits are discussed to inspire behavioural change from a young age.

To complement classroom learning, students are taken on educational visits to the Ramco Nursery located at the PACR Polytechnic College campus. Here, they gain first-hand exposure to a wide variety of plant species and modern nursery practices, including greenhouse and shade house (often referred to as blue house) cultivation techniques. The visits provide students with an opportunity to observe professional nursery management and understand how scientific methods are used to raise healthy plants.
