Students Turn Scrap into Statement Furniture at Upcycling Workshop

Category: Carbon Neutrality

What began as a week-long training programme in sustainable design ended in a strong display of creativity and craftsmanship. Students of Ramco Industrial Training Institute (ITI) showcased a range of functional furniture made entirely from discarded materials.

The hands-on workshop was led by Auroville-based upcycling furniture designer Mr. Marc Dana. It concluded last Saturday. The initiative combined environmental awareness with practical skill-building. Organised by Ramco Community Services, the programme is part of the Carbon Neutral Rajapalayam initiative, which promotes sustainable living practices.

During the week, participants learned to design and build furniture using reclaimed wood, scrap steel, and other materials often treated as waste. By the end of the workshop, the students had created an impressive collection. This included chairs, tables, workstations, and sofas. Each piece reflected both function and thoughtful design. Shown in the picture are one set of furniture upcycled in the workshop. It highlights the ingenuity and skill of the participants.

The initiative gave students valuable technical skills. It also built a deeper understanding of sustainability. It showed how innovation and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
