The Eco Club of Ramco Institute of Technology (RIT) recently conducted a Young Green Enthusiasts Programme for students of Government Higher Secondary School, Soolakari, Virudhunagar, with the aim of fostering environmental awareness and encouraging the students to become responsible stewards of nature.
The programme offered students an opportunity to learn about the environment through a combination of practical laboratory activities, a biodiversity nature visit and awareness sessions. The students actively participated in laboratory activities and explored the natural surroundings, observing the biodiversity around them and gaining a better understanding of the importance of conserving natural ecosystems.
Science faculty members from RIT accompanied the students during the biodiversity visit, providing guidance and explaining the significance of protecting biodiversity and natural resources. The experiential nature of the programme enabled the students to connect classroom learning with the environment around them.
As part of the initiative, yellow bags were distributed to the students as an eco-friendly alternative to plastic bags, encouraging them to reduce their dependence on single-use plastics and adopt more sustainable waste-management practices.
Dr. G. Kanthimathi, Eco Club Coordinator interacted with the students on the importance of avoiding plastic bags and choosing environmentally friendly alternatives. The awareness session encouraged the students to recognise that small changes in everyday habits can contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.
The programme concluded with a visit to a massive 700-year-old African Baobab tree located on the campus of Chinmaya Vidyalaya at Ilanthope in Rajapalayam, Tamil Nadu. The ancient tree provided a fitting conclusion to the programme, giving the young participants an opportunity to witness a remarkable natural heritage site and appreciate the importance of conserving nature for future generations.
