To mark World Ocean Day, observed annually on June 8, Ramco Community Services organised marine pollution awareness programmes across selected wards in the city, highlighting the need to protect oceans, rivers, lakes and other water bodies from pollution.
The initiative aimed to educate the public on the growing threat posed by plastic waste and improper disposal of garbage into water bodies, and to encourage responsible environmental practices at the community level.
During the programme, participants were informed about the importance of conserving oceans and marine ecosystems, which play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting biodiversity. The awareness sessions highlighted how plastic pollution endangers marine life, contaminates water resources and causes long-term damage to the environment.
Residents were urged to avoid dumping waste into rivers, lakes, drainage channels and other water bodies, as such practices contribute significantly to water pollution and ecosystem degradation. The programme also stressed the importance of segregating waste at source to facilitate effective waste management and reduce the volume of waste entering the environment.
As part of the campaign, the public was encouraged to minimise the use of single-use plastics and adopt eco-friendly alternatives such as reusable bags and sustainable household practices. The organisers emphasised that small changes in everyday behaviour can collectively make a significant impact in reducing pollution and protecting natural resources.
