Many emotional struggles that surface in adulthood do not begin with the individual. They often have deeper roots in family histories, shaped by experiences, fears, losses, and unresolved wounds that have been passed down across generations.
Recognising this often-overlooked reality, Ātmaprasāra has been conducting counselling and emotional wellness sessions focused on intergenerational healing, conscious parenting, and healthy family relationships. The initiative seeks to help individuals and families understand how unhealed emotional experiences can quietly influence behaviour, relationships, and parenting practices.
According to counsellors associated with the programme, trauma is not always transmitted through dramatic events alone. It can be passed on through emotional patterns, beliefs, coping mechanisms, communication styles, and responses to stress. Children learn not only from what parents teach them, but also from what parents unconsciously model through their actions and emotional reactions.
“A parent who has not healed from their own painful experiences may struggle with anxiety, emotional regulation, excessive worry, or overprotectiveness. Children growing up in such environments often internalise these responses and may come to view the world as unsafe or unpredictable. Without awareness, these patterns can continue from one generation to the next,” explain the facilitators.
The counselling sessions encourage participants to explore an important question: “Is this emotional burden truly mine, or is it something I have inherited?” Through guided reflection, discussion, and therapeutic exercises, participants learn to identify recurring family patterns and understand the origins of their emotional responses.
The programme focuses on helping parents and caregivers recognise unresolved emotional wounds, process difficult experiences, and develop healthier ways of relating to themselves and their children. The objective is not to assign blame to previous generations, but to cultivate understanding, compassion, and healing.
Key themes addressed during the sessions include emotional awareness, family relationship dynamics, healthy boundaries, communication skills, self-compassion, parenting with emotional intelligence, and breaking cycles of fear, shame, and silence.
Through its intergenerational healing initiative, Ātmaprasāra aims to empower families to transform inherited patterns into opportunities for growth. By helping parents heal unresolved emotional burdens, the organisation seeks to ensure that pain is not unconsciously passed on to future generations, creating healthier relationships and emotionally resilient families.
