Community Awareness Program at Sankaralingapuram and Panakulam

Category: Solid Waste Management

A Community Awareness Program focusing on environmental hygiene, waste management, sanitation, and greenery was successfully conducted at Sankaralingapuram and Panakulam recently, under the aegis of Ramco Community Services. The initiative aimed to create awareness among residents about maintaining a clean and healthy environment through sustainable practices.

A total of 36 participants, including youth, women, and elders, actively took part in the programme. The session featured interactive discussions, demonstrations, and question-and-answer sessions to help residents better understand environmental responsibility and public hygiene.

During the awareness session, participants were educated about the twin-bin system for effective waste segregation. The use of the green bin for biodegradable waste such as food leftovers, vegetables, and organic matter, and the blue bin for non-biodegradable waste including plastics, metals, and dry waste, was explained in detail. Organisers highlighted that proper segregation helps promote recycling and composting, reduces pollution, prevents health hazards, and supports sustainable living.

Practical methods of waste segregation at the household level were also demonstrated. Residents were advised to separate wet and dry waste, keep hazardous waste isolated, and dispose of waste regularly using appropriate bins.

The programme also stressed the importance of sanitation and personal hygiene. Participants were encouraged to make proper use of toilets and maintain cleanliness in their surroundings to prevent the spread of diseases.

As part of the environmental awareness drive, organisers highlighted the importance of planting and protecting trees. Residents were informed that trees improve air quality, provide shade, reduce heat, and help maintain ecological balance. Participants were motivated to plant saplings and take responsibility for nurturing them.
