Sustained awareness campaigns and improved waste management practices have helped five wards in Rajapalayam Municipality emerge as model wards under the municipality’s ongoing Solid Waste Management (SWM) initiative. Ward 5, Ward 16, Ward 27, Ward 31, and Ward 39 recorded significant improvements in source segregation and door-to-door waste collection within just three months of implementation.
Data from Shrishti Environment and Livelihood Foundation, the implementing agency of the on-going solid waste management initiative of Ramco Community Services, showed a sharp rise in segregation levels across the selected wards. For instance, in Ward 5, segregation increased from just 15% in December 2025 to 48% in March 2026 following continuous awareness efforts. Similarly, Ward 16 recorded a major improvement, with segregation levels rising from 24% to 73% during the same period.
The door-to-door waste collection efficiency also improved considerably. In Ward 5, collection coverage increased from 54% in December 2025 to 70% in March 2026 through better coordination and facilitation measures. Ward 39 witnessed collection efficiency rise from 75% to 92%.
Overall, the initiative achieved nearly 80% to 90% efficiency in door-to-door collection and 60% to 70% segregation at source among households and commercial establishments in the identified wards.
The awareness activities focused on educating residents about waste segregation, responsible disposal practices, street cleanliness, and the importance of maintaining hygienic surroundings. Regular door-to-door campaigns, public interactions, and community engagement programmes were conducted to encourage public participation.
